SET SAIL FOR THE BRETON ISLANDS: OUR MOST BEAUTIFUL SEASIDE ESCAPES FROM LA BRETESCHE

Categories : Discoveries in Brittany, published on : 6/17/26

Some days begin in the gentle calm of a morning at Domaine de la Bretesche: coffee overlooking the park, light slipping between century old trees, fresh air filled with promise. Very quickly, one desire takes hold: to head out to sea.

From Vannes, Quiberon, Port Navalo or Locmariaquer, ferry connections make it possible to reach several iconic islands of Morbihan, including Belle Île en Mer, Houat, Hoëdic, Île aux Moines and Île d’Arz. Timetables vary with the season, so it is always best to book and check crossings before departure, especially in summer.

Here is our selection of Breton islands to experience for a day, a weekend or a slower interlude, between sea, silence and art de vivre.

BELLE-ÎLE-EN-MER
the great wild escape

Among our favourite destinations for experiencing the full power of southern Brittany, Belle Île en Mer holds a special place. The largest of the Breton islands truly lives up to its name: dramatic cliffs, hidden beaches, colourful harbours, ever changing light. Visitors arrive at Le Palais from Quiberon, before heading towards Sauzon, the Aiguilles de Port Coton or Donnant beach.

Belle Île is an island to be explored slowly. By bicycle for the most contemplative travellers or on foot for lovers of coastal paths, everyone finds their own rhythm. The island lies 17 km off Quiberon Bay and has around 85 km of coastal trails, much loved by walkers.

Good to know: the Quiberon to Belle Île crossing takes around 50 minutes, with more sailings in high season. In summer, plan ahead for parking in Quiberon and aim to arrive early at the ferry terminal.

HOUAT
the postcard island

Houat has the immediate charm of places that never need to overdo it. Here, cars are scarce, the paths carry the scent of warm grass and ocean air, and the beaches seem to have been drawn for those who enjoy walking until they find their own corner of paradise.

From Quiberon, visitors come to Houat for a sun filled day: lunch overlooking the harbour, a swim in almost translucent water, a walk towards Treac’h er Goured beach or the coves of the south. The island particularly appeals to couples and families seeking an easy, gentle escape without an overly packed schedule.

Insider tip: bring light, comfortable shoes, swimwear and a windbreaker. Even in midsummer, Breton weather likes to play with contrasts.

HOËDIC
the confidential one

Smaller, more discreet, more secretive, Hoëdic is an island to be earned and savoured. Visitors come for that rare feeling of being far from everything, even though the mainland is never very distant. The village is crossed on foot, beaches are reached along the paths, and time seems to stretch between two tides.

Hoëdic is ideal for travellers who love quiet islands, preserved landscapes and days without a fixed agenda. Crossings from Quiberon to Hoëdic are operated by BreizhGo Océane, with the number of daily services varying according to the season. The company indicates, by way of guidance, 2 to 4 crossings per day on this route.

Good to know: plan your return carefully. Hoëdic is not an island where one improvises until the very last minute, and that is also part of its charm.

L'ÎLE AUX MOINES
the gentle spirit of the Gulf of Morbihan

Just a few minutes by boat from the mainland, Île aux Moines offers a softer version of the Breton escape. Sometimes nicknamed “the pearl of the Gulf”, the description feels entirely deserved: flower lined lanes, maritime pines, white houses, peaceful little beaches and an atmosphere of chic seaside retreat.

It is the perfect island for a family or friends getaway without major logistical constraints. Visitors move around on foot or by bicycle, pause for coffee on a terrace, wander down towards Pointe du Trec’h, then allow themselves to be drawn into the singular softness of the Gulf of Morbihan.

Cruises with a stopover at Île aux Moines and Île d’Arz are offered from Vannes, Port Navalo or Locmariaquer, mainly from April to September depending on the companies and the periods.

L'ÎLE D'ARZ
a peaceful interlude

More discreet than its neighbour, Île d’Arz appeals to those seeking a more intimate Brittany. Here, the landscapes open gently: flat paths, meadows, small houses, soothing views over the waters of the Gulf. It lends itself beautifully to slow walks, picnics and conversations that linger.

It is an ideal destination for an easy day trip from Vannes, especially when travelling with children or wishing to avoid overly demanding routes. Tickets may be purchased online or on site depending on the services, but in high season, booking remains the best reflex.

Among our favourite tips: take a morning crossing, have lunch on the island, then return in the late afternoon when the light turns golden over the Gulf.

L'ÎLE DE BREHAT
the wonder worth the detour

Further north, in the Côtes d’Armor, Île de Bréhat is not especially close to Domaine de la Bretesche. Allow around 3 hours by road to Pointe de l’Arcouest, followed by a 10 minute boat crossing to reach the island. Yet this more distant escape is entirely worth the journey.

Nicknamed the island of flowers, Bréhat captivates with its singular atmosphere, its pink granite houses, lush gardens, small harbours and paths that always seem to lead back towards the sea. Car free, the island is best explored on foot or by bicycle, in a rare softness, between coves, lighthouses and sweeping views over the archipelago.

It is an ideal destination for those wishing to devote a full day to a more exceptional escape, almost outside of time. Bréhat is not the closest island from La Bretesche, but it is without doubt among the most splendid and well worth the detour.

Good to know: departures mainly operate from Pointe de l’Arcouest, with a very short crossing. In high season, it is best to check timetables and plan ahead for parking near the boarding point.

RETURNING
to domaine de la Bretesche

After the call of the open sea, returning to Domaine de la Bretesche feels only natural. The park, the 15th century château, the elegant outbuildings, the golf course and the spa together create the perfect retreat after a day spent in sea spray. A member of Relais & Châteaux, the hotel offers a refined anchor point from which to explore southern Brittany without giving up comfort, silence or the art of hospitality.

In the evening, the islands remain in one’s hair, on one’s skin, in every conversation. One brings back a seashell, a harbour photograph, a particular light. And already, another desire to depart begins.
